Suspended Meal in UPM

Tuesday, 21 April 2015

It was been so long, I haven't step my foot at the UPM main campus until last Sunday, I have to go there to deposited some money at the CIMB Bank which is located inside it. Then, I saw this banner. SUSPENDED MEAL.

Just a few days ago, I remember one blogger, I can't remember who[gomenasai] writing about PENDING COFFEE that implemented in Europe(if I'm not mistaken). The original story goes as below:

“We enter a little coffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. While we’re approaching our table two people come in and they go to the counter – ‘Five coffees, please. Two of them for us and three suspended’
They pay for their order, take the two and leave. I ask my friend:
‘What are those ‘suspended’ coffees ?’
‘Wait for it and you will see’
Some more people enter. Two girls ask for one coffee each, pay and go. The next order was for seven coffees and it was made by three lawyers – three for them and four ‘suspended’. While I still wonder what’s the deal with those ‘suspended’ coffees I enjoy the sunny weather and the beautiful view towards the square in front of the café. Suddenly a man dressed in shabby clothes who looks like a beggar comes in through the door and kindly asks
‘Do you have a suspended coffee ?’
It’s simple – people pay in advance for a coffee meant for someone who can not afford a warm beverage. The tradition with the suspended coffees started in Naples, but it has spread all over the world and in some places you can order not only a suspended coffee, but also a sandwich or a whole meal.”
We would ask everyone who reads this story to please comment “im gonna do this”and tag your nearest coffee stores facebook page in the comment section. Try to do it just once lets make a difference together . Share the story spread the word . Have an awesome day :)

So, basically, the rules are people pay in advance for someone who cannot afford. The blogger who wrote the post questioning when will Malaysia do the same act. Well, to tell the truth, Malaysian had started long time ago, the same years when the pending coffee goes viral. You can check the official facebook page below:

So, what is Suspended Meal? Suspended meal concept is the same as pending coffee which is refer to the concept of people paying in advance for a meal that is provided to those in need. When, I first read about this act, I actually feel proud for those who are taking part but after doing some research on this program, I came across some pros and cons about it.

I stumbled upon a website that questioning the effectiveness of "Pending Coffee". You can read the article here.

The main point that I agreed with her argument is the people who need free drinks and food aren’t all on Facebook/internet. Yes, she was right. Even the one that UPM had done is not well promoted(based my own observation). Eventhough each of students in UPM have an access to free wifi, I never see the promoted banner on main wifi login page.

Her second argument, telling people that we actually could also try having actual contact with poor people. Yes, that's right. I prefer the one that Dapur Jalanan had done all these time. They approach those who are in needs. Hopefully, more people will joining the forces. Take some time to volunteer at a meal program.

.... but it's up to us to decide what we will gonna do.... There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others. :)
