Aruna Shanbaug: World's Oldest Comatose Patient

Tuesday, 19 May 2015

Aruna Shanbaug, a girl that lost her dreams. She was the world's oldest comatose patient, the title that no one wants. Her dreams were crushed on November 27, 1973 when she was assaulted and sodomized by a ward boy.

I knew nothing about Aruna before, until I look up what were trending on twitter  yesterday, May 18 and saw Aruna Shanbaug was on the list. Reading some of the articles, I got mixed reviews about Aruna's life after being in a vegetative coma. Her family abandoned her after the incident, claiming that the financial was a problem. None of her family visited her during her comatose state in King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. For 42 years, she had been put under the care of KEM. I also read that during her comatose life in KEM, two doctors stopped her full medical examination when her gums caught rot, her teeth fell out one-by-one in the locked room where she was laid on her bed. Even earlier, nurses stopped the physiotherapy, causing her body to atrophy, her joints to lock into angles, her nails to grow inwards to cut into her palms.
